Dermatillomania- A mental illness related to obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is characterized by repeated picking at one’s skin, resulting in skin lesions and causes significant disruption in one’s life. Skin picking disorder may affect as many as 1 in 20 people.
When you immerse yourself in the pieces, you will notice the color changing pigment shifting subtly as you move past certain works. This signifies ever- changing emotions that are felt when an individual struggles with OCD behaviors. Unbalanced and anxious moments in life can lead to self damage through skin picking, causing feelings of regret. The textural elements within the art depict imperfections in the skin. Whether they are wrinkles; scars or “bumps”, these are a part of you, and tell your life’s story. At the show, glance at your reflection and notice how you are now an element within the piece. The distorted reflection of yourself allows you to become one with the art, a beautiful layer within the work. No matter what you are going through, you can always find the beauty within your layered story. Working with these mediums is cathartic and therapeutic for the artist, controlling mediums and turning emotions into works of art.
